Gen AI to Support Learning

GenAI can enhance learning experiences, provide personalized feedback, and streamline repetitive tasks, freeing up time for students to focus on the content and mastering your learning objectives.  Purposefully integrating GenAI into your class can also help students to prepare for their futures.  This subpage offers a variety of prompts design to inspire creative ways to incorporate GenAI into your courses.

Purposeful Integration

Purposeful integration starts with your learning goals.  After thinking about learning goals, you'll want to consider if students will be engaging with GenAI output you provide or directly interacting with it.  

You'll find suggestions below associated with different learning goals.  

Understand Limitations of GenAI

You may want students to develop realistic expectations about what GenAI can do and its limitations.  This can be done comparing expert sources with GenAI output, identifying missing perspectives, recognizing bias, and/or identifying inaccuracies in the output.  

Develop Critical Thinking Skills

Adding a required evaluation of GenAI output can prompt students to think more deeply.  This could be critiquing GenAI responses generally, identifying strengths and weaknesses, or verifying evidence and citations.  

Learn Effective Prompting

It is a skill to be able to use GenAI effectively.  Students can engage in writing prompts, comparing prompts with other students and then noticing differences in output depending on the prompts.  They can go through multiple iterations refining their prompts and reflecting on how different prompts change results.  

Greater Awareness of Responsible GenAI Use

Just because GenAI is all around them, students may not understand all of the things one should consider before using it.  You can prompts students ask themselves questions prior to use to help them make informed and responsible decisions about GenAI.  

Enhance Brainstorming

GenAI can be a brainstorming partner, helping students to think about alternative perspectives, generate different approaches to a problem, and overcome writer's block.  

Improve Communication

GenAI can help students strengthen communication while maintaining their own voice and ownership of their writing.  GenAI can be used to revise drafts, give suggestions for writing to different audiences, and improve clarity or organization.  

Deepen Content Knowledge

GenAI can be a helpful study partner.  While students need to understand its limitations, students can use GenAI to generate practice problems/questions and explain difficult concepts.  

Build Metacognition Skills

Unless students are prompted to reflect on their learning, it regularly doesn't happen.  You can ask students to describe how GenAI influenced their thinking/product, identify what they still don't understand, reflect on when GenAI helped or hindered their learning and evaluate whether GenAI made them more efficient/thoughtful or worth use.

FAQs

Students are likely to use this technology to cheat. How can we catch them?

  • Unfortunately, the ChatGPT software is difficult to detect. A couple of programs have been created to determine the likelihood that text was written by an AI, but these programs are easily tricked and difficult to prove. It is likely that both the ChatGPT AI and the detection programs will continue to improve with time. For now, it may be important to realize that it will be challenging to detect the use of ChatGPT in the classroom.

Has the university issued an official syllabus statement about ChatGPT?

  • 糖心破解版 State does not yet have an official syllabus statement for ChatGPT. While this conversation is ongoing, we encourage instructors to have an honest conversation with their students about the importance of academic integrity and the limitations of the ChatGPT technology.

I am worried that my students will not learn how to write.

  • The impact on student learning is a serious concern when confronted with new technology. An important strategy may be to focus on the writing process through iterative assignments that encourage students to reflect on their approaches. Such assignments would be difficult to complete using AI. Another strategy is to invite students to revise and critique the writing of others.

ChatGPT gets a lot of facts wrong. How can we help students to navigate this technology?

  • Because ChatGPT is often confidently wrong, it may be easy for students to believe what they read and move forward with inaccurate information. It is important to speak with your students about the importance of checking for references and verifying information. You may consider turning this into a classroom assignment in which students are asked to verify or correct a ChatGPT-generated response.
